OUR VISION STATEMENT

Political competition and armed struggle dominated front- page news during the past century. This had tended to mask the fact that at the underlay, the sameness, the unity, the effervescence of the human vocation had endured. The human enterprise, its multiplicity of expressions, its variability, innovation and creativity, continues to thrive.

For a permanent solution to global Insurgency and Terrorism, the hope of the 21st century is to anchor on the human paradigm and effect a cultural reinstitution of a new world order, to replace the oftentimes mechanistic and praetorian imperatives of the past century.

But, as we embraced the new millennium, one observes that the pattern of cultural evolution has been relatively complex and at times contradictory. There is now a cultural crisis of direction. Within western culture, which has been most visible in the global landscape and which provided the role model for the rest of the world, sociologists now complain of a spiritual exhaustion and the emergence of a counter-culture.

In turn, African culture, because Africa had been out of contention in the global power contestation, due to the effects of slavery and colonialism, Africa had been sidelined, marginalized and relatively ill understood by the rest of the world .

OUR STRATEGY AT UZZITZ
1

The Center aims to re-emphasize a new appreciation of culture. It attempts to make the concept of culture more intelligible by stressing culture as a problem solving device. By adopting this functional paradigm, it becomes possible to put values on cultural traits based on ascertainable objective factors.

2

In taking the above perspective, the center aims to investigate and identify a 'global cultural movement'. In this effort, it will begin to identify, describe, and define the roots and nature, with the character of the culture of different peoples of the world, its growth, movements and traditions.

3

The centre attempts to link-up with the Second World Black and African Festival of Arts & Culture (FESTAC 77) project, to reinvigorate the spirit and vision of FESTAC 77 which is to make the culture of Black and African peoples understood by the rest of the world.

5

On this platform as a research, study and development center, the Centre takes a long-range historical view of world evolution and how culture can be re-invented through education, implementation of research findings so as to ensure originality in thoughts and ideas, a means which culture can be deployed as a veritable tool for national and international diplomacy, integration and sustainable human development.

6

As an art center, the UCAC appreciate that art is synonymous with culture. Art is viewed as emphatic affirmation and celebration of the reality and effervescence of life. Arts exist to emphatically describe life and reality. It exists also, to reflect on it and in reflection, renews it and multiplies its expressions. In short, arts interpret culture.

7

By adopting the functional appreciation of culture, as well as viewing culture in the context of an exercise that could be judged in its determined value, the center aims to function as programmes, projects and research development center, whereupon programmes of cultural intervention can be proactively designed and recommended for insertion into specific social environments.

8

On the whole, the Centre exists as a social and intellectual powerhouse and factory for artistic and cultural products and processes. To a large extent, the Uzzitz exists to enhance, document and research into material and non material culture. The Uzzitz center exists therefore to identify and also create the marketplace for arts and artistic products, nationally and internationally.
